Ancient idol found near Ponguru

July 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:03 am IST - NELLORE:

During the earth works on the Somasila high level canal, an ancient idol of Chennakesava Swamy was found near Ponguru village in the Marripadu mandal limits of Nellore district here on Monday.

The villagers gathered at the spot where the idol was found and appealed to authorities for constructing a temple there.

It was said that a Siva temple and a Poleramma temple were located there several decades ago.

The residents of Ponguru said that more idols could be found in the neighbourhood as several temples existed there. The Somasila high level canal works are aimed at providing water to the upland farmers in the district through channels from the reservoir.
