Enthused by the visit of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant, DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Monday said an alliance was the need of the hour as its victory alone could save Tamil Nadu.

When asked whether the meeting between him and Mr Vijayakant could be taken as a first step towards formation of an alliance for the 2016 Assembly polls, the DMK leader said he could not say anything now on the subject. But he favoured an alliance.

“At the present situation, there is a need for an alliance. The victory of the alliance alone can save the State,” he said. Mr. Karunanidhi was also full of praise for Mr. Vijayakant for his efforts to unite the people and political parties of Tamil Nadu on issues concerning the State.
