With the completion of nominations for the ZPTC member elections, now the focus had been shifted on the snatching of the coveted Zilla Parishad chairperson post, which is reserved for the BC woman for the first time in the district.
There is hectic lobbying for the Zilla Parishad chairperson post among Congress and TRS leaders. The Congress is confident of securing the ZP chairperson post by winning from majority of the ZPTC seats on the slogan of carving out separate Telangana State. Similarly, the aspirants of the coveted post were of the view that they could chalk out strategies accordingly to win from majority of seats if their names were finalized for the ZP chairperson post.
In order to secure the coveted ZP chairperson post, All India Mahila Congress secretary and former ZPTC member Nerella Sharada had filed her nomination from the Ramadugu ZPTC member post. From Ibrahimpatnam mandal Sunitha, wife of Dr Venkat and former MPP Shobha from Mallial mandal were in the race for the post.
On the other hand, TRS mahila wing state president Tula Uma had filed her nomination from Kathalapur mandal to snatch the ZP chairperson post. Similarly, Veerla Kavitha from Ramadugu mandal, Mallugari Padma from Gambhiraopeta mandal, Gangula Padma from Velgatoor was being figured prominently for the chairperson post.
In the meantime, the BJP leaders said that they would emerge as a deciding factor in the occupation of the ZP chairman post. It may be recalled that in 1995, the BJP ZPTC members supported TDP to occupy the chairman post by G Rajesham Goud. In 2001, the BJP ZPTC members defected and supported TRS to occupy ZP chairman post by K.V. Rajeshwara Rao. In 2006 elections, the Congress had occupied the ZP chairperson post with the support of TRS and offering vice chairman post.
This time, the TDP, which had become considerably weak following the defection of majority of leaders to the TRS and Congress, is striving hard for an alliance with the BJP in the elections and emerge as force in the district in a triangular contest.
