YSR Congress MLA representing Nagari R.K. Roja on Tuesday launched a legal battle against the Andhra Pradesh Police for “trampling on her rights” when she came to attend the National Women’s Parliament (NWP) here.

Ms. Roja went to Gannavaram and filed a private case against Director-General of Police (DGP) N. Sambasiva Rao, two Assistant Commissioners of Police, and a Circle Inspector, in the Additional Junior Civil Judge Court. The court posted the case for hearing on March 3.

Before proceeding to Gannavaram, Ms. Roja told the media here that it would be wrong on her part if she did not fight against the injustice meted out to her as an MLA.

“My inaction will embolden others to violate the rights of common women and even perpetrate atrocities against them,” she said.

Ms. Roja wondered why the police had to escort her to another State (Telangana).

“Don’t I belong to this State? Don’t we have houses here? There are elected representatives who have houses in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Are they going to be flown to these places?” she asked.

Ms. Roja said that the entire nation was witness to the way she had been treated because the national media reported it.

Ms. Roja said that she came to the NWP only because she received two invitations for the event.

“Accommodation was confirmed for me by the organisers. The police wrongfully confined me at the Gannavaram Airport and sent me back to Hyderabad.”

Ms. Roja said that the Chief Minister, who justified the action of the police, mentioned that she was not allowed only because of her “track record.”

“My track record has been better than his,” Ms. Roja hit back.

Without mentioning names she suggested by describing events that she had a better track record than the Chief Minister, Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, Denduluru MLA Chinthamaneni Prabhakar, and Hindupur MLA and actor Nandamuri Balakrishna.

She wondered if the police would treat them in a similar way.
