Social media is a powerful tool to promote an event in a big way. Without burning a hole in one’s pocket, the word reaches far and wide, transcending geographical barriers.

Recognising the enormous reach of this mode of communication, organisers of the National Women’s Parliament (NWP), a three-day international conclave to be held at Pavitra Sangamam near Ibrahimpatnam, are making extensive use of the social media to attract big crowds of girls and women to be part of the first such congregation.

“Besides creating an exclusive and exhaustive website with all the details of the event, we are present on Twitter and Facebook and have uploaded videos on YouTube to help people, especially the fairer sex, understand the significance of being part of this women’s gathering,” said C. Ramalakshmi, Adviser to the Government on NWP.

In one video, Ms. Ramalakshmi makes a fervent appeal to girls across the country to become part of a gathering of more than 10,000 women that would try and find solutions to challenges confronting them in social, economic, moral, and political spheres.

Since the digital space is no more used only for words, songs with lyrics eulogising the power of a woman greet the visitors to the NWP website. “Our online initiatives have generated a lot of energy and excitement over the event. Great visuals and catchy audio have led to more than 8,000 online registrations so far and more than 100 girl students have uploaded their videos airing their views on the proposed event,” said Ms. Ramalakshmi.

Dalai Lama to attend meet

Nobel laureate and Buddhist spiritual guru Dalai Lama, Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and A.P. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will be present at the inaugural ceremony. Puducherry Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi will grace the function on the second day. The valedictory session will feature Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Nirmala Sitharaman.

Each delegate (girl student) will be given a badge; a bag with books on Vivekananda, India and Government schemes for women’s welfare; a pen and a scribbling pad; the programme sheet and a Tirupati laddu besides a small gift item.

A resolution will be passed at the end of every session of the deliberations and based on these a conclave declaration will be prepared.
