2 fishermen drown as boat hits ship

Two fishermen from Pudimadaka in Visakhapatnam district drowned in the Bay of Bengal near Sacremento in East Godavari district when the engine of the boat in which they were sailing hit a ship that was anchored in the sea. The incident took place on Wednesday midnight and the personnel from the Indian Coast Guard Station at Kakinada were searching for fishermen.

According to C.V.N. Murthy, assistant commandant of the ICGS, Kakinada, as many as seven fishermen from Pudimadaka ventured into the sea on twin engine boats for fishing.

On Wednesday night, when they were near Sacremento, one of the boats developed a technical snag and it hit a ship anchored in the sea. Two fishermen Chodipalli Devudu (35) and Ganagalla Tatayya (40) drowned in the sea along with the boat.

The five fishermen on board of second boat managed to reach the shore at Sacremento and alerted the ICGS. The Coast Guard personnel rushed to the spot on their patrolling vessel and brought five fishermen Korivi Tata Rao, Korivi Pentaiah, Jangiri Nukaraju, Pukkalla Devudu and Chepala Gurrayya to Kakinada and handed them over to the Marine Police.

A case has been registered and investigation is on.

Special Correspondent from Visakhapatnam reports: District Fishermen Youth Welfare Association has expressed serious concern over two fishermen who went missing near Kakinada.

Association executive secretary Arajili Dasu said said whereabouts of two fishermen was not known . Meanwhile, fisherman from Pudimadaka P. Dhanaraju left for Kakinada to lodge a complaint with the police on the incident.
