Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday said that a slew of benefits were being extended to women under the Prime Minister’s Suraksha Bima and other insurance schemes, keeping in view the overall development and wellbeing of the beneficiaries.

He took part as the chief guest of a programme organised at the Swarna Bharath Trust near here, where as many as 10,069 women were provided with free accident insurance cover under the national scheme.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said a premium of Rs. 20 lakh was being paid by the Muppavarapu Foundation and the Swarna Bharath Trust for the insurance scheme, adding that he had contributed Rs. 10 lakh from his funds for the cause.

Giving details about the women empowerment schemes, Mr. Venkaiah said that 99 per cent of the targeted women had already been enrolled for the Jan Dhan Yojana in the country.

A pension scheme was also launched under which the beneficiaries would get Rs. 1,000 pension per month after attaining 60 years of age for which they had to pay Rs. 42 per month. If a greater amount is paid per month, a maximum of Rs. 5,000 per month would be made available for the beneficiaries.

Mr. Venkaiah expressed hope that the Mudra bank would come up with a scheme to extend interest-free loans up to Rs. 50,000 to the poor and financially backward families.

District Collector M. Janaki said that as many as 7.75 lakh bank accounts had been opened under various welfare schemes in the district.
