Ambassador to Turkey passes away

Senior diplomat Raminder Singh Jassal died of cancer early on Friday morning in Turkey where he was posted as Ambassador since 2008.

A 1976-batch IFS officer, Jassal had served as Ambassador to Israel and Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington.

He was a member of the Indian negotiating team for the Indo- U.S. civil nuclear deal.

He had served as Joint Secretary in the External Publicity Division of the Ministry of External Affairs from 1999 to 2001, and was at the forefront of communicating India's position during the Kargil conflict in 1999.

“We deeply mourn the passing of Raminder Jassal our Ambassador in Turkey. Dear friend and brilliant colleague,” said Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao.
