‘Alex being released on humanitarian grounds'

May 03, 2012 12:08 am | Updated November 16, 2021 11:33 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Sukma District Collector Alex Paul Menon, who was abducted on April 21, will be released by Maoists in the early hours of Thursday and it is being done purely on humanitarian grounds considering his wife's pregnancy, according to social activist Swami Agnivesh.

Quoting one of the interlocutors of Maoists, Professor G. Haragopal, Swami Agnivesh told journalists here that though the Chhattisgarh government had not fulfilled any of the demands set by Naxals for the release of Mr. Menon, he would be released as a goodwill gesture. Maoists, among other things, had sought suspension of “Operation Green Hunt” by security forces and release of innocent sympathisers and tribals of the State, who were languishing in jails without any trial on the charge of supporting Naxals, he said.

Expresses doubts

Mr. Agnivesh expressed doubts on the outcome of the four-member high-power committee set up by the Chhattisgarh government.
