An alert has been issued across all seven districts in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh in view of the “Martyrs’ week” to be observed by Maoists from Thursday.
The security forces in the highly-sensitive Sukma district have been asked to maintain high vigil.
Maoists observe “Martyrs’ week” every year from July 28 to August 4 in remembrance of their “fallen comrades.”
Memorials The yearly spectacle witnesses the construction of memorials by the rebels in the interior parts of Bastar and Gadchiroli districts of Maharashtra.
“An alert has been issued to all stations and camps to maintain a vigil to prevent and counter any attack or sabotage activity [by Maoists]. Sukma Additional SP Jitendra Shukla has been asked to oversee the sensitive Dornapal subdivision of the district,” Sukma SP I. Kalyaan Elsela said in a statement.
Maoist killed in encounter A Maoist was killed in an encounter with the police in the Dornapal subdivision of Sukma on Wednesday.
“There was a specific input about huge Maoist presence near the Pollampall police station under the leadership of Maoist commanders Aapu Pada and Bhima. District Reserve Guard and the Special Task Force teams were pressed into action. Around 60 Maoists were present on the spot and fired on the security forces. In retaliatory fire, one Maoist got killed,” said Mr. Elesela.
The security forces also recovered one double barrel gun and pamphlets from the encounter spot.
