A major tragedy was averted at Sanganer Airport near here on Sunday night when a New Delhi-bound Air India flight with 173 passengers and crew members on board made an emergency landing with its rear tyre burst and a wing-tip damaged. The passengers and crew members escaped unhurt.

The Imphal-Delhi flight No. AI-890 via Guwahati was diverted to Sanganer Airport because of poor visibility amid the dense fog conditions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the national capital. The aircraft’s rear tyre burst in the process of landing, but the pilot managed to bring the plane to a halt in the middle of the runway.

Though there was commotion in the plane when it came to a halt with a jerk, all the passengers disembarked safely. They were sent to New Delhi by special buses. The schedule of over a dozen flights was disrupted because of the runway being blocked.
