While the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has said it will hold internal deliberations before releasing an official stand to the Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq , an executive member of the body said the judgment will have “wide ramifications” as it has affects the religious rights of minority groups.
The AIMPLB has called for a meet of its executive body on September 10 in Bhopal, where it would hold discussions with its legal committee to decide the next step.
“Court order has affected the rights of religious minority to practice their religion. So it will be having wide ramifications...Our feeling is that the judgment does not follow the Constitutional guarantees,” said Kamaal Farooqui, AIMPLB executive member.
Mr. Farooqui said the AIMPLB would take a “serious view” of the judgment and issue a reaction after detailed internal discussion.
“We will have to go through the order in detail. We will react. We will have a detailed discussion with our legal committee and in our executive committee also. The future course of action, we will decide,” he said.
Zafaryab Jilani, AIMPLB member, said that while a detailed response would be released only after going through the judgment and the executive body meet, he felt that the government would not be required to bring any legislation against triple talaq.
"So far as the government is concerned, I don't think that the government will be required to bring any legislation because that will be again against our fundamental rights," Mr. Jilani said.
"What will be the consequences of the judgment, how far it will help them or go against them is a point to be concerned only when we go through the judgment," he said.
The AIMPLB also said it would continue to carry on with its reform work. "We will try out best to carry on our reform programme throughout the community. And to ensure that this practice of triple divorce in one sitting without any lawful justification may come to an end," Mr. Jilani said.
