In wake of increased student protests, the Benaras Hindu University (BHU) has sought security cover from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the central force’s Director General O.P. Singh said on Tuesday.

“We are examining the proposal; there are issues like jurisdiction of local police that need to be sorted out first,” Mr. Singh told a press conference on Tuesday.

Over a dozen vital installations, including an ISRO station in Port Blair and 10 airports, will soon be brought under armed CISF cover. Last year, the force provided security to the Bank Note Paper Mill India (P) Limited in Mysore, engaged in printing new currency notes, post the demonetisation announcement.

The force, tasked with securing civil airports and critical installations in the aerospace and nuclear sector, is also raising a Special Tactics Wing (STW) to impart enhanced combat training to its commandos.

In the private sector, the force will soon take charge of security at the Reliance Corporate Park in Navi Mumbai, which was approved by the government recently. The force, a senior official said, is considering around 50 requests from the private and public sector units for protection.
