Advocate-General operated upon; still critical

March 08, 2010 12:08 am | Updated 12:08 am IST - IMPHAL:

Manipur Advocate-General Nongmeikappam Koteswor, who was shot at on Saturday night, was operated upon at a hospital here on Sunday to extract the bullet lodged in the chest.

Though Mr. Koteswor spoke to journalists while being taken to the operation theatre, hospital sources said he was not out of danger yet. If his condition did not improve in the next few hours, he might be rushed to Delhi or Chennai, the sources said.

Mr. Koteswor, along with Ministers K. Ranjit and D.D. Thaisii, was returning here after attending a function in Ukhrul district when he was shot at. The bullet hit his left hand, exited through the forearm and got lodged in the chest.

The police did not disclose whether there was a militant ambush, or the bullet was fired “accidentally” by one of the security personnel accompanying the cavalcade. Journalists who visited the scene at Nongada in the Lamlai police station limit on Sunday said it could not have been an ambush, since the site had no bush or boulder for a gunman to hide.
