The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday issued fresh avalanche warning for parts of the Kashmir Valley.

A medium danger avalanche warning for the next 24 hours was issued for the hilly and avalanche-prone areas in the Valley and Kargil district.

“Avalanche warning exists for avalanche-prone slopes in Kupwara, Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Budgam, Anantnag and Kargil districts of Kashmir Division” a government spokesman said.

Precautionary measures

The Deputy Commissioners in Kargil were directed to take precautionary measures. People have been advised “not to venture out in those areas”. “Keep clearing snow deposits from roof tops of houses and bunkers to avoid damages,” said the warning. The warning comes just days after 20 soldiers died in avalanches and snow-caving in Kashmir region’s Kargil, Sonamarg and Kupwara areas.
