The Supreme Court on Monday ordered the Centre to file a comprehensive report on the status of investigation conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases.
A Bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R. Banumathi scheduled the next hearing for February 20 even as Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Pinki Anand submitted that the SIT probe was a “work in progress.”
However, advocates A.S. Bedi and Shikha Sarin, appearing for petitioner S. Gurlad Singh Kahlon, argued that the SIT’s tenure would end on February 17. They submitted that the extension to the SIT had been given twice.
Counsel pointed out that the reference to the SIT required that charge sheets ought to be filed after investigation within six months. They submitted that the counter-affidavit of the Union stated that out of 216 cases, only 22 were identified and no charge sheet had been filed till date.
Ms. Anand said there would be a further extension to the tenure of the SIT.
