SC declines early hearing of plea to defer budget

January 07, 2017 12:35 am | Updated 12:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Supreme Court on Friday declined to grant urgent hearing of a plea to postpone the tabling of the annual budget until after the Assembly elections in five States, including Uttar Pradesh.

A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar told advocate M.L. Sharma that they would hear his petition in due course but not immediately.

“There is no urgency in it. We will lay down the law when the petition comes up before us in due course,” Chief Justice Khehar told Mr. Sharma.

Party symbol issue

The petition has also sought a direction to strip the BJP of its lotus symbol on the ground that it violated the model code of conduct.
