A message to corrupt public servants: Acharya

‘Verdict shows no one, irrespective of their position in politics, can escape from the law’

February 14, 2017 11:34 pm | Updated 11:34 pm IST - BENGALURU:

Senior Advocate B.V. Acharya, who served as Special Public Prosecutor and Special Counsel in the disproportionate assets case against former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and AIADMK interim general secretary V.K. Sasikala, said the Supreme Court verdict was a “message to those public servants involved in corruption.”

“The verdict has demonstrated that no one, irrespective of their position in politics, can escape from the law and justice system of the country,” he said.

Hailing the “methodical” probe done by investigation officer N. Nallamma Naidu, then Superintendent of Police of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, who had filed charge sheet against Jayalalithaa and others, Mr. Acharya said the evidence collected by the investigation officer came in handy for the prosecution to prove its case effectively.

Mr. Acharya said the High Court itself would have convicted Jayalalithaa and others had it not committed an “arithmetical error” in calculating the amount of disproportionate assets.
