Three children were killed and a woman and a girl injured in a blast at Digboi in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday afternoon.
Assam Home Secretary G.D. Tripathi told The Hindu that the explosion occurred at Bor Torani village under the Digboi police station around 4.20 p.m. in which Rinki Kurmi (10) died on the spot and Rupesh Kurmi (4) and Sandhya Kurmi (4) died of their injuries later. The injured were Pushpanjali Kurmi (8) and Bhanumoti Kurmi (25). The blast occurred near the Kharjan High School.
The injured told the police that victim Rinki Kurmi’s father had brought home an object and it exploded while the children were playing with it, Mr. Tripathi said.
There was an input that the Paresh Barua-led faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom was planning to carry out blasts, he said.
