Twenty-three scholars of Sanskrit, Pali/Prakrit, Arabic and Persian languages were on Saturday named for President’s Award.
Besides six other scholars — five from Sanskrit and one from Persian — have been selected for Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman, a government release said.
The maximum 16 President’s Awards have gone to scholars from Sanskrit .
Three each are from Arabic and Persian while the lone awardee in Pali/Prakrit category is Dr. Dharma Chandra Jain. Professor Sheldon Pollock has been named for Sanskrit (International Award).
Those awarded in Sanskrit category include Kompella Ramasuryanarayana, Vachaspati Sharma Tripathi, Ramakant Shukla, Vishwa Murti Shastri, N.S. Anatha Rangachar, N. Gopala Panicker, Sudyumna Acharya, Keshao Ramarao Joshi, Bhagaban Panda, Kamal Anand, Badri Prasad Shastri, Annadur Rajagopala Chariar, Ram Chandra Pandey, Ashok Kumar Kalia and Samiran Chandra Chakrabarthy.
Shabbir Ahmad Nadvi, Shah Abdus Salam and Abbullais Ansari have been named in Arabic category, while Rehana Khatoon, Mohd Yaseen Quddusi and Syed Mohammed Tariq Hasan have been selected for Persian.
Among those named for Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman are Chandra Bhushan Jha, Malihar Arvind Kulkarni, Sachchidanand Mishra, Narayan Dash and Sasibhushan Mishra (all Sanskrit) and Asad Ali Khurshid (Persian).
