14 flights diverted from Mumbai due to poor visibility

Poor visibility at Mumbai airport due to smog forced authorities on Tuesday to divert 14 flights scheduled to land here to neighbouring stations.

“As visibility dropped to below 1,500 meters due to smog at the airport, 14 flights have been diverted to other stations,” a Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) spokesperson told PTI here.

The flights were diverted to Pune, Aurangabad, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Bangalore, the spokesperson said.

The main runway of the Mumbai Airport remains closed every Tuesday between 12 noon and 6 pm due to re-construction work which is scheduled to be completed by March next year.

However, the shortened runway is kept open for flight operations during these hours, but only small aircraft can take-off or land from this runway.

Of the 14 flights diverted to other stations, five were Kingfisher Airlines and nine were Jet Airways.

While seven flights were diverted to Ahmedabad, three were diverted to Hyderabad and two to Pune. One flight each was diverted to Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Flight operations are likely to be normal once the full runway gets functional after 6 pm, the spokesperson said.
