10 Congress panels to shortlist candidates

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday approved the constitution of 10 screening committees for shortlisting party candidates for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Bhubanesh Kaita will chair the committee for Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, while V. Narayanasamy will chair the committee for Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura. Assam has been clubbed along with Andaman and Nicobar, Bihar and West Bengal under a committee that will be chaired by Sushilkumar Shinde.

The committee for Uttar Pradesh will be headed by Jitendra Singh. Vayalar Ravi will head the committee for Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Karnataka.

Azad to head panel

The panel for Kerala, Lakshadweep, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu will be headed by Ghulam Nabi Azad. It will also have Subhankar Sarkar as member, while Mukul Wasnik will be the AICC general secretary represented on it.

The PCC delegates will include Ramesh Chennithala, Ponnikkam Shaikhoya, A.V. Subramaniam, and B.S. Gnanadesikan, while the CLP will be represented by Oommen Chandy, V. Vaithilingam and K. Gopinath.

The committee for Gujarat, Rajasthan, Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu will be chaired by Pawan Bansal, while P.C. Chacko will head the committee for Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab.

The committee for Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha will be chaired by Oscar Fernandes.
