Elaborate security ahead of counting of votes in Karnataka

Authorities have made elaborate arrangements with enhanced security for counting of votes for the Karnataka Assembly elections, which will be taken up on Tuesday.

Pollsters have said would likely go down to the wire, with a neck and neck race between the state's ruling Congress and challenger BJP.

Panchayat elections in West Bengal were held across 20 districts amid tight security.  About 11.33% votes were polled till 9 am.

There have been reports of sporadic violence in districts of South 24 Paraganas, North 24 Paraganas, Cooch Behar.

The filing of nominations for the Panchayat polls from April 2 to April 9 and then on the extended date on April 23, were marred by violent clashes between cadre of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and workers of Opposition parties resulting in the death of several people.

A legal battle was also fought over the rural body polls with Opposition parties approaching both the Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court against the alleged terror tactics of the TMC and the SEC’s inaction.

Thailand marked its annual sowing season with its Royal Ploughing Ceremony. A public holiday in Thailand, the ploughing ceremony involves two oxen being used to plough a symbolic field, with a higher official sowing the seed. The ritual is believed to be carried out since the 12th Century.

Re-polling is under way in three booths in Karnataka. In Hebbal's Lottegollahalli, re-polling was announced as the electronic voting machine was found faulty.

In Kushtagi in Koppal district, re-poll is being conducted in two booths as electors cast their votes in a wrong booth.

A squall with wind speed over 100 kmph hit the Capital on Sunday evening reducing visibility, mobility and causing damage to property. The sky turned overcast by 4 p.m. and gusts of wind started blowing by 4.30 p.m. and continued intermittently till 10 p.m. The MeT Department said that the strongest gust of wind reached a speed of 109 kmph.
