Doctors say a Turkish singer popular in his homeland and across the Middle East remains in critical condition, a day after being shot in the head in Istanbul.

Dr. Ilhan Elmaci said Tuesday that Ibrahim Tatlises remains in intensive care.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the 59—year—old Tatlises and his spokeswoman, Buket Cakici, on Monday and sped away. The victims were leaving a television station by car after the star’s weekly music and chat show.

Cakici is in stable condition following an operation on her neck.

Tatlises, a member of Turkey’s Kurdish minority, has recorded more than 30 albums and acted in movies.

The motive for the attack is under investigation.
