U.S. police say a gunman has been shot and killed near the campus of North Carolina Central University in Durham.
Durham police said they had tracked a suspect thought to be armed onto the campus late Monday, prompting officials to lock down the school about 10.15 p.m.
Police said the man was subsequently found in woods around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
The University’s police chief, Tim Bellamy, said the man challenged officers with a gun and they fired. The man’s name has not been released.
Police say the gunman was not a student. The State Bureau of Investigation has taken charge of the case.
