A New Zealand man was arrested by police on Monday after two people were shot dead and one injured at a local unemployment office, police said.
Suspect John Tully was found by police dogs on a rural property near the town of Ashburton, about 75 kilometres south-west of Christchurch, reports quoted police as saying.
There was “minor resistance” from Tully, who received dog bite wounds, Canterbury District Superintendent Gary Knowles told reporters. No police were reported to have been hurt.
Tully, described as homeless by local media, became the target of a manhunt after a man wearing a balaclava and carrying a firearm entered the Work and Income office in Ashburton, and fired several shots before fleeing, the reports quoted police as saying.
There were no details reported on the identity of the victims.
Prime Minister John Key said he was “shocked and disturbed” by the killings, the New Zealand Herald reported.
All Work and Income offices and schools in the region were closed as a precaution after the shootings, it said.
