An explosion killed at least two people and injured 44 persons including several children on Monday outside a primary school in south-western China’s Guangxi region, state media said.
Twenty-two children were among the injured after the explosion on a motorized tricycle cart shortly after 7 a.m. at the Balijie Primary School in the tourist city of Guilin, local police said.
A preliminary investigation identified the cart driver as a suspect and confirmed that he died in the explosion, the semi-official China News Service said. But it was unclear whether the police were treating the explosion as accidental or deliberate.
A woman also died in the blast, while local hospitals were treating 39 people, including 11 with serious injuries, the agency said.
A fire reportedly started on the tricycle cart before some unidentified material exploded.
Online photographs showed several damaged motor scooters, including at least one on fire, with debris strewn over a wide area in front of what appeared to be the school’s main entrance. Several injured people appeared to have suffered cuts and burns.
