Eight policemen were killed and six others injured in an ambush by communist rebels in the northern Philippines on Monday, police said.

The unit was travelling towards the town of Allacapan in the province of Cagayan when it hit a landmine, said the province’s police spokesman, Senior Inspector Cesar Orlanes.

About 30 members of the New People’s Army rebel group opened fire at the policemen after the explosion, Mr. Orlanes said.

Seven policemen were killed on the spot, and one died later of his injuries.
