A court in Egypt on Monday ordered the release of Hosni Mubarak pending his retrial for the deaths of protesters in 2011, state television reported, though the former president will remain in custody pending a separate investigation.
Mr. Mubarak was arrested on April 12, 2011 and convicted in June for complicity in the killing of hundreds of people during protests that led to his ouster in 2011. He was granted a retrial in January.
His lawyer, Fareed al-Dib, said in his application to the Cairo court that Mr. Mubarak has now served the maximum of two years in provisional detention.
The former leader, 84, is unlikely to be released before Sunday.
On April 7, authorities ordered that he be detained for 15 days pending investigation of a separate corruption case.
Mr. Mubarak is currently being held in a military hospital southern Cairo.
