At least 20 people were killed in Peru when their bus plunged into a 200-metre ravine, police said.

Eleven people were injured in the accident that took place on Saturday on the highway between the towns of Puquio and Chalhuanca in the southern Peruvian region of Apurimac. Officials said 11 women and nine men died in the crash.

The passengers were on their way to take part in the traditional religious feast of Our Lord of Huanca.

Accidents of this kind are common in Peru’s interior regions. They are mostly caused due to the poor state of vehicles and highways or because of careless driving and the rough terrain.
