Twelve high school students were killed when a bus fell into a 90-metre ravine in the northern Philippines, police said on Wednesday.

The students were on their way home from school in Buguias town of Benguet province, said Superintendent Davy Vicente Lim-mong, a regional police spokesman.

The bus was negotiating an uphill portion of the road when it began to slide backwards and plunged into the ravine, Superintendent Lim-mong said.

The driver was believed to be the father of one of the students who died, he said.
