A U.N. special investigator says he has opened a probe into allegations of torture used by Libyan ruler Moammar Qadhafi’s forces.
The U.N.’s special rapporteur for torture, Juan Mendez, confirmed on Wednesday he is looking into “allegations under the Qadhafi regime” since his forces began their brutal suppression of protests and crackdown on opponents last month.
Mr. Mendez told reporters at the U.N.’s European headquarters in Geneva that Qadhafi’s use of torture and illegal detention in the past is “very well—documented.”
He would not specify what he was looking into when asked if he would probe media reports that Qadhafi’s soldiers were using ambulances to remove patients from hospitals and execute them.
