An official in southern China says flooding and landslides from Typhoon Fanapi have killed 18 people and left at least 44 missing.

The typhoon hit Guangdong province after making a direct hit on the island of Taiwan on Sunday and killing two there.

China’s national meteorological center says Fanapi is the strongest typhoon to hit China this year.

An official with Guangdong’s flood, drought and wind control department says 13 are dead after landslides and flooding. The state-run Xinhua News Agency says the dead include five people killed when a dam at a tin mine in Xinyi city was hit by a landslide and collapsed.

Heavy rain is forecast for central and western parts of Guangdong through Thursday morning.
