Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster listens as President Donald Trump makes the announcement at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, that McMaster will be the new national security adviser.

U.S. President Donald Trump named on Monday Army Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster as his new National Security Adviser, the post left vacant after Michael Flynn's resignation.

Mr. Trump called him a "man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience."

"He is highly respected by everyone in the military and we're very honored to have him," Mr. Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida.

He spoke sitting alongside Mr. McMaster, who was dressed in uniform. Mr. Trump said he would work alongside acting national security adviser Keith Kellogg, a retired three-star general, in a "very, very special" collaboration.

Robert Harward, a retired vice admiral and former Navy SEAL, reportedly turned down Mr. Trump's offer of the job last week over concerns that he would not be able to bring in his own team to staff the National Security Council. Other reports said he was put off by the apparent chaos in the White House.
