Pakistan suspends operating license of Geo News

June 06, 2014 05:27 pm | Updated 05:27 pm IST - ISLAMABAD

Pakistan’s media regulatory agency has suspended the operating license of the country’s leading news channel for two weeks after a spat with the country’s military.

The decision was announced on Friday by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority.

The organisation suspended Geo News for 15 days and imposed a $100,000 fine.

The suspension is the latest challenge for the media company following an assassination attempt against its top news anchor, Hamid Mir, on April 19.

The station angered the military intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence, by repeatedly airing accusations by Mr. Mir’s brother that it was behind the attack.

The Ministry of Defence later petitioned the regulatory agency to pull Geo’s license.
