Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won Karachi’s NA-250 in a partial re-poll on Sunday. The Election Commission of Pakistan had ordered a re-poll in 43 polling stations of the National Assembly constituency after allegations of rigging in the May 11 election.
As per unofficial results, PTI's Arif Alvi built on his lead from the other polling stations. The dominant party in Karachi, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), had boycotted the selective re-poll, demanding re-poll in the entire constituency.
Meanwhile, both parties took out protests on Monday with allegations and counter-allegations following the murder of a PTI leader on Saturday. The PTI has alleged that MQM chief Altaf Hussain was responsible for the murder.
In a related development, Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani lauded the nation for defying the diktats of what he described as “an insignificant and misguided minority” which had threatened dire consequences if people participated in the elections.
