The High Court on Wednesday cleared the way for the lower court to run the trial proceedings against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and eight others in two corruption cases. Two petitions filed by Ms. Zia, challenging indictment orders against her in the two cases were summarily rejected. She was indicted on March 19 in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases.

In 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against six including Ms. Zia and her son Tarique Rahma, accusing them of pocketing Tk 21 million from funds meant for the trust and which reportedly came from a foreign bank. Anti-Corruption Commission’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said there is no legal bar for the lower court now to record deposition of witnesses.
