The Colombo Magistrate Court on Monday issued summons to former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, asking her to appear in court on September 16 in connection with a case filed by the Bribery Commission.
In January this year, President Mahinda Rajapaksa dismissed the former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka on charges of corruption. Several sections of the Sri Lankan society protested this controversial ruling against her.
Her impeachment, followed soon by the appointment of former Attorney General Mohan Peiris in her place, faced much criticism and was also challenged in the court.
Ms. Bandaranayake first appeared before the Bribery Commission in March. Following her request for some time to respond, she was granted leave until April 1.
Additional statements made by the former Chief Justice on the charges leveled against her in regard to the provisions of the Bribery Act were recorded on July 16, Ceylon Today , an English daily in Clombo, reported.
Reports in the local media quoted Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption, Lakshmi Jayawickreme, as having said that two investigations — in connection with the allegations made against Ms. Bandaranayake with regard to her alleged failure to declare assets and liabilities — were on.
With the investigation into the assets and liabilities charge reportedly completed, the investigation of the charges under the provisions of the Bribery Act is underway.
