President-elect Ashraf Ghani won Afghanistan’s disputed presidential election with a decisive lead of more than 10 percentage points, the Election Commission said on Friday.
“The Election Commission on Friday presented Mr. Ghani with an accreditation, endorsing his win in the race, that said that he had secured 55.27 per cent of total votes,” spokesman Noor Mohammad said.
The news comes five days after Mr. Ghani agreed to form a national unity government with his former rival Abdullah Abdullah.
The Commission said Mr. Ghani received 3.9 million out of the total 7.1 million votes cast in the June 14 run-off, confirming that widespread fraud had occurred.
The unity government deal signed on Monday paves the way for Mr. Ghani to be the next President, while Mr. Abdullah will take on the newly-created role of chief executive — broadly equivalent to Prime Minister.
