Scores of supporters on Saturday welcomed Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on his arrival in capital Islamabad from a nearby hilltop resort in Murree.
He was staying at the resort after last week’s dismissal from office by the Supreme Court for concealing family assets.
Mr. Sharif was earlier this week replaced by a lawmaker from his party, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
Show of strength
After spending the night in Islamabad, Mr. Sharif will travel to his home city of Lahore on Sunday to address a rally there. It will be the first show of political strength from Mr. Sharif’s ruling party since his removal.
“I have not done anything which obstructed the country’s progress,” he said during an informal chat, adding, “I have acted upon the [Supreme Court] verdict but didn’t comment on it. I believe in the rule of law. I am not politically isolated.”
