Portugal seizes 6 tons of hashish, nabs Britons

September 09, 2010 06:27 pm | Updated 06:27 pm IST - Lisbon:

Portuguese police say they have seized more than 6.6 tons (6 metric tons) of hashish and arrested two British citizens suspected of belonging to an international trafficking ring. Authorities say detectives with a special drug unit seized the hashish in an operation in southeastern Portugal last weekend.

Police said in a statement on Thursday that armed officers apprehended a truck containing just over 3 tons of hashish and after further searches found a similar amount at a different location.

The statement said the operation came after a yearlong investigation into a suspected British-led ring based in Portugal’s southern Algarve region. Large seizures of hashish from Morocco are not uncommon in southern Portugal.
