At least one person was killed due floods triggered by a storm sweeping through the Philippines, a government agency said Sunday.
The Office of Civil Defence said thousands of people had been displaced by floods in the eastern and central region.
It identified the fatality as Luis Dingcol, 57, who drowned Saturday in Carigara town in Leyte province, 575 kilometres south-east of Manila, after being swept away by river currents.
Nine people were also injured late Saturday after lightning struck an airplane parked at the Manila International Airport. The victims had sought shelter under the plane during a sudden thunderstorm.
Thousands of passengers were stranded after several domestic flights have been cancelled and passenger ferries were not allowed to sail due to bad weather.
The weather bureau said tropical storm Aere, with maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometres per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 100 kph, made landfall in the eastern province of Catanduanes Sunday morning.
It was moving northward at 13 kph and was expected to be 100 kilometres south-east of Aurora province Monday morning.
The weather bureau placed 21 provinces under storm alert. It warned residents living in low-lying areas of floods and landslides.
