A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook the north-western coast of Nicaragua on Thursday night not far from the Honduran border.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 10.6 miles (17 kilometers) east of Puerto Morazan, Nicaragua, and 70.8 miles (114 kilometers) northwest of the capital, Managua. The USGS said it had a depth of 10 kilometers and struck late on Thursday night.
The newspaper La Prensa reported that the walls of a church had collapsed in the nearby city of Chinandega, but there were no immediate reports of casualties. The USGS reported a 5.1 magnitude aftershock.
