As the deadline to present a constitution for the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is approaching with many constitutional tasks incomplete, political parties have said the timeframe to ready the constitution needs an extension.
Leaders of the major ruling party, the CPN (UML), on Sunday concluded that at least six months would be needed to prepare the constitution. Party chairman Jhalanath Khanal has already said the time remaining is not enough to draft the statute. Mr. Khanal was the first one to admit that the constitution was not possible within the present deadline. Leaders of other political parties would admit this ‘off the record”. But as the time remaining is just a little over a month, even Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subash Chandra Nembang says only “consensus” can help meet the deadline.
The timetable to ready the constitution has already been amended 10 times.
