Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday called up his new British counterpart David Cameron and congratulated him.
Dr. Singh also wrote a letter extending his warm wishes to Mr. Cameron and expressed the hope that the United Kingdom and India would further strengthen the bonds of friendship.
The 10-minute telephonic conversation was described as “very warm and friendly.” The two leaders discussed a number of bilateral issues but the foremost was a discussion on the world economy.
Dr. Singh met Mr. Cameron in 2006 after the latter chose India as his first foreign destination on being elected Conservative Party leader.
In the letter, Dr. Singh recalled that meeting and noted the diversification of bilateral relations into a multi-faceted strategic partnership. Both countries were now well-placed to build on this edifice to address domestic and global challenges, noted Dr. Singh while inviting Mr. Cameron to visit India.
