Screening of Kamal Haasan film Vishwaroopam , has been suspended in Sri Lanka.

Cabinet spokesman and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that the screening of the movie was suspended because it had the potential to damage racial harmony in the country.

“The suspension will remain in force till a further review is done,” Mr. Keheliya said at his weekly press conference on Thursday.

Contentious theme

Initially, the film was given the nod by the Sri Lankan Censor Board after some scenes were edited.

“I was not happy with the contentious theme of the movie, so I asked the authorities not to show it to the public until a final decision was taken,” he said.

Many Tamil Muslims

Sri Lanka has a significant Muslim population and most of them are Tamil-speaking.

Many Tamil and Hindi movies release in Sri Lanka on the same day of their release in India.

Though the market in the island nation is relatively small and facilities in cinemas are still in need of improvement, there is a huge following for Hindi and Tamil films.

Race 2 has just opened here, while Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan is still drawing crowds.

Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaya , Alex Pandian and Samar are the Tamil movies that are playing as on Friday in cinemas in the island nation.
