Chinese President Hu Jintao is calling for a new Asian security formula that sidesteps disagreements in a region increasingly beset by rival territorial claims.

Mr. Hu told participants at a regional gathering in southern China that mutual trust, equality and coordination should underpin the new concept. While emphasizing dialogue and coordination, he said countries should shelve their differences and seek common ground.

Mr. Hu delivered his remarks at Friday’s opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia on the island province of Hainan in the South China Sea. The region of key shipping lanes is considered a potential military flashpoint because of overlapping sovereignty claims between China and several Southeast Asian nations.
