Hispanics see shift in Trump's immigration rhetoric

As he turns his attention to the general election, Donald Trump is signalling that he is ready to tone down his fiery rhetoric on illegal immigration at least behind closed doors.

Meanwhile Republican officials appear eager to push him in a more moderate direction. They’re telling Hispanics he’s abandoned his divisive primary pledge to deport the estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally, although Mr. Trump hasn’t said so publicly himself.

The Republican National Committee’s director of Hispanic communications said at the party’s convention earlier this month that Mr. Trump has already said he will not do massive deportations, but instead focus on removing those who have criminal records and live in the country illegally.

It’s a statement that may be a surprise to Mr. Trump’s legion of loyal followers.
