A Somali police officer says four children and their mother died after their house collapsed in Somalia’s rubble—strewn capital.

Somalia, which has been in chaos for the last two decades, has no capacity to respond in emergency situations, such as fires and collapsed buildings. Most of Mogadishu’s buildings are suffering from years of warfare and neglect.

Police officer Fadumo Abdi said residents used bare hands, axes and shovels to retrieve the bodies after the overnight collapse.

Police officer Abdullahi Hassan said on Friday that one boy survived with minor injuries.
