Every moment in Nepal crucial: Yechury

March 02, 2010 11:20 pm | Updated 11:20 pm IST - KATHMANDU

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday made it clear that he came here to express solidarity with Nepal’s peace process and that he did not come as an agent with any message.

“I’m here as an agent of the Indian people, who support Nepali people,” he said at a press conference.

‘Moral strength’

Mr. Yechury said he came to give the Nepali people the “moral strength.”

His visit followed an invitation from Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and President Ram Baran Yadav.

Besides Mr. Nepal and Mr. Yadav, he met with Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, CPN (UML) chairman Jhalanath Khanal and Nepali Congress leaders.

He could not meet Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala as the octogenarian leader is suffering from some health problem.

Mr. Yechury said every moment in Nepal was “crucial” but added that it was up to the Nepali people to have a new political regime.

He said: “I’m here to support the process of transition that should be logically culminated in the declaration of a democratic republic of Nepal within new constitution.” He hoped to see all political parties together in the transition process.
